Over the recent years, game industries have been receiving a lot of bad media from certain groups protesting that games creates a negative impact on children. Lawyers like Jack Thompson have been fighting game industries for over 20 years. He says that violent video games are the reason for events such as the Columbine high school massacre on April 20th, 1999. It was reported that the students who held up the school were playing violent video games. Studies have been made that shows, "Violent computer games may make people more likely to act aggressively..." Parental groups, lawyers, psychologists, pediatricians and other activist groups have banned together to take violent video games such as Grand Theft Auto, God of War or Resident Evil off the shelves.
This is, well, stupid to be frank. These "activists" and parents obviously target video games because they are easy to target. Everyone plays them! They are in every home and almost every kid plays them. Heck, there is probably some little boy shooting the face off a boogie man looking creature right now. The thing is, humans are always going to violent. It is in our nature to bash each other. People are just looking for something to blame - also in human nature, if there is fault, there has to be something to blame. To the parents: maybe if you spent a little more time teaching your children rather than letting them play the games that shoot the face off boogie man looking creatures, they wouldn't be so violent. "But Jackie! I can't! I have work and I can't monitor them 24/7!" Really? You can't monitor them? It seems like video games have gotten the bad media when it should've been targeted towards the lack of basic parental skills. Children - and by children, I mean kids under the ages of 12-14 - need money. Before they reach the tender ages of 12-14, they probably would not be working for money. That means their only source of income comes from, ta da, the parents. Maybe if you didn't have time to monitor your own children, you can at least keep track of your financial spending and by that, I mean keep track of how much your child spends. Yes yes, there are other factors, but before this turns into a rant about bad parenting, I shall turn back to the topic, violent video games.
Look, violence is always going to be an issue. I play violent video games, all the time in fact. Actually, I can say that on an average, I play VIOLENT video games for at least two hours a day. I am fine. I am normal; in fact, I don't feel the urge to shoot someone right now. My mother does not monitor me, in fact, I live alone and no one monitors what I do. I can buy whatever I want. The point I'm trying to make here is that why are other children being violent? Not just children, it is sometimes teenagers and adults too. Why are they being violent?
The answer I offer you is a simple one. Education and Parents. Parents are constantly blaming violent video games because they are clouded by their lack of common sense. While they are out there protesting outside of Rockstar Games headquarters, their child is at home playing the very violent video games they are trying to rid of. Independence is what I have that many other people are lacking. I have a mind of my own; I am not influenced by these violent video games, they cannot tell me what to do. By the way, independence can only be gained if the parents allow it. Education is another. There is FREE education for children. Yes, FREE. You are not charged, this is not a scam, many countries offer FREE education.
A lot of the cases of violence due to violent video games often come from people who suffer from mental illnesses. So my point is, parents, stop blaming the violent video games. (I say this because it is mainly parents who blame them). Stop trying to find the easy route out because this "issue" has made a lot of parents go from stupid to ignorant and blind.
